IFN Therapy May Decrease Incidence of HCC

Comments Off

Imai and colleagues (Osaka HCC Prevention Study Group, Osaka, Japan) investigated the incidence of HCC and associated risk factors in 367 Japanese patients with chronic hepatitis C who were previously treated with 6 months of IFN therapy.

Patients were examined every 3 to 6 months by abdominal ultrasound or CT scan for development of HCC. Mean follow-up time was 37 weeks. Of the 367 patients, HCC occurred in 19 patients (0/134 complete responders, 6/107 partial responders, 13/126 nonresponders).

The cumulative incidence of HCC was significantly lower in complete responders compared with partial or nonresponders (P< .001, log-rank test).

Regression analysis revealed that efficacy of IFN therapy (RR 3.29, P= .003) and histologic fibrosis score (RR 2.16, P=.021) were significant variables related to HCC development. There was no difference in HCC incidence by genotype. These results indicate that IFN therapy may decrease the incidence of HCC in patients with chronic HCV infection.
